Our Duty to Our Daily Paper

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says in a statement made on November 16, 1908, concerning The Christian Science Monitor, "My desire is that every Christian Scientist, and as many others as possible, subscribe for and read our daily newspaper" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 352, 353). Does anyone suppose that the fulfillment of this desire should be any less active because Mrs. Eddy is no longer with us in the flesh? Is there any more appropriate way to express our gratitude to our Leader than to do our best to carry out her desires? Do not let us ask, "How is the movement responding to that request?" Let us ask ourselves: "What is my response? Am I helping others to be obedient?" If not, the time to begin is now. Let there be no delay or procrastination in thus expressing our gratitude by act for the great blessing she has conferred upon us and all humanity.

The establishment of the Monitor was an important part of our Leader's great demonstration. She had a purpose in all she did. A Christian Scientist's duty is to aid in eternalizing the fulfillment of that purpose by subscribing for, reading, and mentally working for the Monitor.

There are those who subscribe for but do not read it, who read it but do not subscribe for it, and far too many who neither subscribe for nor read The Christian Science Monitor.
