Sign of Immanuel
How
often, through the mists of mortal sense,
Men yearn to see some sign or evidence
That God is near!
"Cannot the ear," they ask, "that senses sound,
Detect the movement of omnipotence?
Nor yet the eyes, accustomed to the light,
Discern His presence in Love's depth and height?"
How precious then the thought that now and here
We can with opened eyes and vision clear
Know God aright!
Cannot the thoughts, the acts, the chosen speech
That show His nature, such a lesson teach,
Remove all doubt and, by Truth's undimmed light,
Reveal God with us in Love's proven might?
