Gratitude for Christian Science...
Gratitude for Christian Science prompts me to say as did the Psalmist of old. "Many, O Lord my God are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered."
While teaching in a Protestant Sunday school more than twenty years ago, I was invited to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a Christian Science church. When entering the church I knew nothing about this religion, and upon leaving I felt that Christian Science was too good to be true, and that later I should be disillusioned. However, I have since learned, through the study of the Bible together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Genesis 1:31); also, that "God is Mind: all that Mind, God, is, or hath made, is good, and He made all. Hence evil is not made and is not real" (Science and Health, p. 311). I am therefore convinced that nothing can be too good to be true.
At one time, when I was studying our Lesson-Sermon, a statement on page 242 of our textbook stood out very clearly to me: "Denial of the claims of matter is a great step towards the joys of Spirit, towards human freedom and the final triumph over the body." I decided to draw the attention of my class to these words the following Sunday. That week I fell on the ice, and immediately my arm became very painful and my hand began to swell. Later, I noticed that both ankles were very much swollen. I at once put into practice the truth of the statement above mentioned, and before Sunday the pain and swelling had disappeared.
