I became interested in Christian Science...
I became interested in Christian Science in 1913 while living at the home of a Christian Science practitioner, and to him and his dear wife I shall always feel deep gratitude for setting my feet in the right path.
While there I was healed of rheumatic fever in its worst form. I had previously suffered from this ailment and had been left with a serious heart trouble. I had also been told that another attack would leave me worse than before, and as I had nearly passed on at that time I was ready, when the second attack came, to turn to anything that offered hope. My healing was marvelous. The heart condition as well as chronic constipation of eight years' standing was also healed by Christian Science. Later, I was healed of astigmatism for which I had been told by one of the best oculists in the Middle West that I should have to wear glasses all my life. This healing took place in one week through the work of the same devoted practitioner.
There have been many milestones on the way, but the one that stands out most clearly was a demonstration of the truth regarding place. I had graduated from an unaccredited high school, and when the business I was in was sold I decided to get a place as a nursery governess, intending to go to night school. A practitioner worked on the problem and a position was found, but at the last minute the girl whom I was to have replaced decided to stay. I do not remember being at all disturbed by this, and a few weeks later a relative, who taught in a southern university, came home for the summer vacation. Knowing that it was necessary for me to support myself, he asked me what I intended to do. I told him I was going to get some kind of work where I could attend night school and complete my high school work. He offered to lend me money, without interest, to enable me to go to the state university. I hesitated to let him take such a risk, but he insisted that if he was not afraid I should not be, and so his offer was accepted.
