About twenty-seven years ago I...
About twenty-seven years ago I was healed in Christian Science of a condition which had troubled me for more than sixteen years. I could not hear with my left ear, and there were recurring pains that were very severe. This was caused in the beginning by an abscess, and medical men, after sixteen years, had given up hope of bringing about any permanent relief.
I had been a preacher in an orthodox church and was very antagonistic toward Christian Science, so when I asked for help it was as much in defiance as it was in the hope of getting relief. To my great astonishment I was healed in just one treatment. After my healing, I wanted to know something of the operation of Christian Science, so I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. My wife, who was a Christian Scientist, naturally had Mrs. Eddy's writings in the home. I read them very frequently. The chapter on Prayer I read several times, and concluded that nothing finer had ever been written.
Since my first healing, I have been healed of many ailments, including chronic stomach trouble, constipation, influenza, and neuralgia and I have witnessed the healing of appendicitis, arthritis, infantile paralysis, dropsy, rupture, paralysis, rattlesnake bite, and tuberculosis. I can find no words fully to express my gratitude to God for Mrs. Eddy, and for the larger understanding of God obtained through the study of her writings. I have a sense of her meaning where she writes on page 201 of the Christian Science textbook, "The best sermon ever preached is Truth practised and demonstrated by the destruction of sin, sickness, and death." I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for class instruction.—Fred M. Underwood, Los Angeles, California.
