On the walls of the branch...
On the walls of the branch church of which it is my privilege to be a member are the two following inscriptions: "God is Love," and, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 494). These quotations have been the keynote to my growth in Christian Science.
Twelve years ago I walked into this church a mental and physical wreck, the condition having been brought about by extreme fear of a so-called hereditary illness which threatened me. Although I had partially read our textbook, Science and Health, and had attended a lecture and also a service some years previously, I had apparently gained nothing, and it was only in a moment of terrible despair that I was drawn to attend a testimony meeting.
On the occasion of my second visit an experience was related of the healing of a condition so like my own that I eagerly, though almost incredulously, questioned the testifier at the close of the meeting. Her answers were so clear and definite that I realized with joy that what could be true for her was true for me and all. That night I borrowed the textbook, and after reading the first chapter, on Prayer, and with the loving help of a practitioner, I gained a clearer sense of God as Love. Although all kinds of problems have arisen since then and my progress in understanding has at times seemed slow and halting, there has been a steady betterment of every condition. With one exception I have not spent a single day away from my office through illness, although formerly I had frequently been absent for periods varying from a few days to six months; and an ever-increasing abundance of health, supply, and happiness has been demonstrated.
