Excerpts from Letters Concerning Christian Science Camp Welfare Work

[From a soldier]

I have seen those problems in my experience which error claimed most difficult to solve, dissolve and disappear through the operation of divine Science. Also, I have found those things which bothered me most have had to be overcome, and I am very grateful in this respect for the help received from one of the Christian Science Wartime Ministers. His thoughtfulness has been sincerely appreciated in my months of training, and I know that his efforts to serve have meant a great deal to others.

Thought is more liberal, more willing to learn, more eager to see, among soldiers today than I have ever seen it in civilian life. And the ability of Christian Science to bring light to the world meets response among those who have begun to realize what discipline, duty, sacrifice, and self-immolation really mean. The soldier learns these four requirements early, and is more impressed with them as his military experience widens.

I have learned to love Paul's epistles to Timothy more than ever, for he likens Timothy to a soldier and admonishes him, "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called." He gives every requisite of a soldier in these epistles—watchfulness, strength in tribulation, courage, and a good hold on Love. They should be the Christian soldier's handbook.
