Years ago I felt impelled, by a power not then understood, to take a trip to America, believing that a long sea voyage and fresh scenes would restore me to health and bring to my restless, discontented state of mind the happiness and peace for which I was then yearning. It failed to do this, and I began to feel there was nothing left to live for. All interest in life seemed to have gone.
This extremity proved to be "God's opportunity." Christian Science was presented to me. Attending a Wednesday evening testimony meeting for the first time, I felt there must be something very wonderful about a religion that could make people so radiantly happy.
With my first glimpse of God's ever-loving presence, and of His ability to heal our diseases and help us in every difficulty, I soon realized that it was for this truth I had been hungering for many years. A sense of joyous expectancy of good soon replaced one of hopelessness. Physical ailments began to disappear, and during the first week of reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I was healed of constipation and chronic indigestion. Later, an attack of pleurisy was overcome within a few hours through the joyous realization that error could not triumph over good, and through gaining some understanding of Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 207): "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause."
