The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England (First Church). Lecturer: Colin Rucker Eddison; introduced by Mrs. Georgina H. Gibson, who said:—

Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." I am one of the great multitude of people who, through the teachings of Christian Science, have accepted that invitation, and I am now enjoying the promised rest.

During the years 1914 to 1918 I had many trying and unhappy experiences, and shortly afterwards suffered a great sorrow. I began to question why these things could happen, why the world was in such a state of chaos and suffering. I found myself thinking that God could not be a God of love, as I had been taught to believe, or He would never allow these things to happen. Then my health began to trouble me. I had medical advice and tried many remedies, but nothing helped me. I attended several churches, hoping that somewhere I would get the comfort which I so greatly needed, but I did not find it until Christian Science was presented to me. I attended a service at the branch church of which I am now a member and found the peace "which passeth all understanding." I obtained the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and on reading the first chapter, entitled "Prayer," I was healed of insomnia. I glimpsed something of the God whom I had been seeking.
