A few years ago I was suddenly...
A few years ago I was suddenly stricken with influenza and laryngitis, at a time when there was an epidemic of these troubles in a Midwestern city. Being busily occupied in a home there, I was unaware of the epidemic. Not sufficiently rising above this condition, I called a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly supported me with absent treatment. In the night I became very ill, and although I was unable to raise my head, my thought reached out to God. I picked up a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and opend the book to these words (p. 352): "To Jesus, not materiality, but spirituality, was the reality of man's existence, while to the rabbis the spiritual was the intangible and uncertain, if not the unreal."
I tried to be very still and to become conscious of the truth contained in those words. As my thought rose to feel and know the substance of that statement, I gained a strong conviction of the truth of my being and existence in God alone and not in matter. I then turned to page 572, where Mrs. Eddy says, "In Science we are children of God; but whatever is of material sense, or mortal, belongs not to His children, for materiality is the inverted image of spirituality." This thought made it still clearer to me that I was spiritual and the error only an inverted images, and that I must become completely conscious else. This I was able to do, and in three days I was at the Sunday services, completely free.
I express my gratitude for the members of the Bible Lesson Committee, who through their consecrated study provide us with such helpful Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly to study and to apply to any every need. I am also grateful for class instruction, and for the privilege of taking the nurses' training course at the Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.—(Miss) Grace E. Dearborn, Chicago, Illinois.
