Our small son started going to...

Our small son started going to the Christian Science Sunday School with his playmate, and one day asked me why I did not read the Bible as did his friend's mother. This question startled me, and I began to take account of myself.

I had been quite religious and prayerful during my childhood and had had many prayers answered. However, a change had come about when my mother passed on while I was away at school and after I had faithfully prayed for her each night. Another change came about later when I was surprised at the pain of childbirth. I could not understand why God allowed this pain. I could not reconcile happenings such as this with my childhood God, and so had stopped studying.

I started the study of Christian Science soon after this, to find out if it could help my sister, and in a short time I witnessed a painless childbirth in Christian Science. Also, I joyfully began to learn of God, who knows no death, and of man in His image and likeness.

The sister mentioned had been pronounced incurable with tuberculosis of the throat and had been in a hospital many months. When I had read a small part of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and was convinced of the truth it contained, I wrote her about it. She and her husband studied this textbook and later attended the Christian Science church. She received her healing sometime in the next year. She has had no return of this ailment during these ten years.

In reading the textbook for the first time I remember looking up many times and saying to my husband, "It is wonderful!" I had such reverence for this truth I would not even enter into arguments with him on the subject. Soon he started reading and loving Christian Science also.

While reading the first chapter, on Prayer, I was healed of my dependence on medicine. This resulted in the healing, in three days, of constipation, for which I had taken medicine for fifteen years. This trouble has never returned.

Christian Science has regenerated our family. We have become members of The Mother Church and of a branch church. Many testing times have come to me during these years and many mother's fears have been overcome with the help of a practitioner. Broken bones, tonsil trouble, children's diseases, and blood poisoning are a few of the difficulties which have been overcome.

As I have learned somewhat the real meaning of home, as given in the Bible and our Leader's writings, our home has been established in an unusually secure manner.

When about eleven years old, our son was struck by an automobile while on his way home from school. His bicycle was demolished and his shoes were knocked completely off his feet; even his teeth were all loosened. But he was conscious enough when in the ambulance to protest vigorously against going to the hospital, insisting that he was a Christian Scientist.

I could not be reached until about three hours later, at which time we went to the hospital to get him. He walked out to us and said that he was all right. Later that afternoon, on reading the account in the newspaper of his fractured limbs, concussions, and internal injuries, I looked out of the window and saw him skating, and was grateful for the Love that had protected him. I found out later that a Christian Science practitioner was called by the hospital, because the child had refused a doctor, and she reported that on seeing him she had found that he had done his work and she was not needed. I am grateful for the Christian Science Sunday School, where the children are taught reliance on God.

Our little girl had an inherited difficulty of overlapping toes on both feet when she was born. She was six months old when we started the study of Christian Science, and I removed the tapes around the toes and held to the words of the Bible, "The crooked shall be made straight." They became normal during her first year, and are very active little feet indeed.

I am very grateful to Christian Science for revealing to me a better understanding of God and of Christ Jesus. I am grateful to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. This great revelation was the outcome of her unswerving love for God, and Science and Health the outcome of her love for humanity.—(Mrs.) Lena Wetherby, Los Angeles, California.
