Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in these columns can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on May 17, 1942.]

"When Christ, who is our life, shall appear" (Col. 3:4)—It may be observed that the translation "be manifested" provides a more literal rendering of the original Greek, and is upheld by the American Standard Version.

"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth" (Col. 3:5)—The Greek verb here rendered "mortify" might rather be translated in more modern phrase "put to death" or "destroy." The Twentieth Century New Testament suggests: "Destroy all that is earthly in you;" while the Riverside New Testament has: "Treat the members of your earthly bodies as dead."
