I am one of that vast army who have great cause to be grateful for Christian Science. About ten years ago I experienced an instantaneous healing, after being ill for a number of years with what the physicians pronounced intestinal and stomach disorders. I sought relief in diets, hospital observation, and operations, but was not permanently benefited. I suffered constant pain and discomfort, and towards the last had become indifferent as to whether I recovered or passed on. While I was in this state of despair, a neighbor, knowing of my condition, told me something of Christian Science. I had never heard of it before. Although I was befogged in hopelessness, I must have had some thought of being helped, for I allowed her to take me to a Christian Science practitioner, and I was instantaneously healed that day, after all those years of suffering. It took several days for me to realize that the healing had taken place and that I was no longer in pain. I shall never forget this experience or cease to be grateful.
A few years later, when I had allowed myself to become burdened with a deep sense of worry over home and financial problems, heart disease attacked me. It seemed to gain a foothold before I was fully awake to it, and it took weeks of persistent work by a practitioner and faithful study on my part before this trouble was banished. Forward steps were taken during this trial for which I am grateful. This testimony would not be complete without an expression of gratitude for the faithful help of the practitioner who stood by me in this trying time. She encouraged and sustained me when my own faith seemed strained to the breaking point.
I should like also to tell of another healing that came about as a result of attending a church service. For about a year and a half I had suffered from pain in the upper arm and shoulder, which finally extended to the back and limbs. At times I was almost helpless to move out of a sitting position. One Sunday morning, as I was preparing to go to the church service, I became so cramped with pain that I could not stand erect without great difficulty. I remember thinking that if I could but reach the church and listen to the reading from the desk I should be better. I did go, but sat in agonizing pain all through the service. During the afternoon or evening, however, the pain left, and it has never returned.
