About eleven years ago, I found...
About eleven years ago, I found myself in a sanatorium, suffering from tuberculosis—a county charge. "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." I did not respond to treatment in the sanatorium, and this, of course, worried my husband, who was having a desperate struggle back home, trying to be both father and mother to our four little ones. One day he found a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and brought it to me, hoping that it might help. I read it almost constantly (hiding it under my pillow when doctors and nurses were around), for I was determined somehow to leave the sanatorium.
After six months, which seemed like six years, I was released, the disease being described as "apparently arrested," but was told to take life very easy for several years, and not to worry. Conditions in my home made that impossible, so it was not long before I was again being almost forced to return to the sanatorium. But the seed of Truth had been sown, and I decided to place radical reliance on Christian Science. A practitioner started working for, and with me.
She broke the bread for me, as did our Master for his disciples, and I ate it up hungrily. My mental condition improved rapidly, and, of course, the body responded accordingly. Although the way was difficult, the faithful practitioner's trust and confidence never wavered. She led me gently out of the valley of the shadow, teaching me to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly and to love the Bible and Science and Health.
