The "strong tower"
THE desire for safety is one of the earnest longings of the human heart. Instinctively we feel that somewhere there must be security for us, for our health, our supply, and our lives. Men endeavor to guard their possessions by the making of laws, and to save their lives by using material remedies, seeking shelter in matter.
All such means have failed to bring a lasting sense of peace or security; and the belief that man is material, requiring material means and methods to save him from harm, has been at fault. These efforts have failed because matter is not real, but is a fleeting misstatement of man and the universe. Hence, centuries of striving along these lines have brought no lasting relief to individuals. But Solomon told us long ago how to find safety when he said, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe."
In the present day, Christian Science has brought to all those who obey its teachings the only sure access to the "strong tower" of Truth. This Science has given us definite rules which, when followed, serve as a light penetrating the darkness of human fear with the glorious effulgence of Love, guiding us into the realization of God's presence and love, wherein we find eternal and indestructible security. The man of God's creating has always been safe in the forever presence of God. Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 89), "Immortal man, in God's likeness, is safe in divine Science." Therefore, it is only the human sense of existence in matter that seems to be seeking safety.
