In the fall of 1920, after I had...
In the fall of 1920, after I had led a life of dissipation for thirty-five years, the physician in Providence, Rhode Island, who had been treating me for three years, told me that because the heart and other organs had become inactive, I could not possibly live for more than three months unless I went to Florida, in which event I might live through the winter, but not longer. Since I wanted to live as long as possible, I decided to go to Florida.
After being here a few weeks and continuing to grow weaker, I expressed a desire one day for something to read. My wife brought me a package and said: "Here is a book you said a friend gave you in 1908. Why don't you read it? You might become interested in it." I removed the covering and found it was "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I did not remember ever having looked at the book before. A friend had given it to me because I had been instrumental in obtaining a good position for her husband. To please my wife, I started reading the book, and I have continued to do so daily since then.
The latter part of the following May I returned to Providence, healed through reading Science and Health. The day I arrived, one of my old "buddies" called to see me, and after talking for a few minutes he said, 'I am not the man you bade good-by when you left for Florida." I asked him what he meant, and he said, "Shortly after you left here I became interested in Christian Science, and I am a reformed man." I said, "Reading Science and Health has healed me and is responsible for my being here now."
