Christian Science was brought to my attention in 1908...
Christian Science was brought to my attention in 1908, after I had experienced years of suffering, during which time practically every material means of relief had been tried and had failed, and eminent physicians and surgeons had pronounced my case hopeless, giving me but a few months to live and saying that nearly every organ in my body was diseased as a result of typhoid fever and complications, which I had had several years before. In desperation I turned to Christian Science with my whole heart, and through the loving help of practitioners, and the daily prayerful and faithful study of Mrs. Eddy's works, especially of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," together with the Bible, I improved perceptibly from week to week, until the healing finally came.
On page 486 of our textbook Mrs. Eddy makes this statement: "Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,—hence their permanence." Several years ago, through the realization of the truth of this statement, I was healed of deafness in one of my ears, and also was able to lay off glasses, which I had worn for twenty-two years, having been unable to read without them. I had been working in Christian Science to overcome failing vision, but only spasmodically, and the trouble was not overcome. Then, when it seemed my sight was going fast, I made up my mind to work more earnestly over the condition than I had ever worked before. That evening I picked up Science and Health and tried to read it without my glasses, but I could not outline the letters; all was a blur. The thought came to me, You cannot see to read, but you can pray. I continued to know the truth for eight days, and on the evening of the eighth day my normal vision came, although it lasted only about one minute, when a mist seemed to come over my eyes. The next day it came to me clearer than ever that sight is an idea in Mind, perfect and eternal, and is focused in the infinite and not dependent on matter; that evening my healing came, and I have never worn glasses since and can read very fine print.
From early childhood if I ate anything containing acid my teeth would be put on edge to such a degree that I could hardly eat. This trouble has been overcome through the application of Christian Science, and now I can eat the sourest fruit or food without any ill effects. Many times I have had decayed cavities in my teeth, but each time these teeth have been beautifully healed and filled by a method of surgery far superior to material science: by knowing that there is no decay in God's spiritual, perfect, eternal creation. Several years ago three of my teeth became very loose. Again I steadfastly applied the truth, and in about a month the gums and teeth became normal; and today, though I am well past the threescore-and-ten mark, I still retain all of my teeth in perfect condition, with the exception of one wisdom tooth broken off in an accident.
