Several years ago a customer asked me, "Can a man be a Christian and be in business?" He had just become a member of the church to which I belonged, and seemed to feel that when he added on to the cost of his goods a legitimate profit, it was all wrong. I had never heard of Christian Science, but I replied that, as I understood God, He had no knowledge of our material transactions but He did know our hearts. Years later, when I began the study of Christian Science, and found on page 465 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy's definition of God, I could easily accept Science as the truth.
Three years ago I heard a testimony given at a Wednesday evening meeting by a man who had been healed instantly of the smoking habit after visiting a practitioner. I had had the smoking habit ever since boyhood, was ashamed of it, was unable to quit, but never had considered it something that could be healed in Science. Following that evening, for a couple of weeks I had an abiding desire deep down in my heart for that healing. I made no effort to quit smoking, and gave myself no treatments, but one night I was awakened and could see no cause for being so wideawake. I asked myself, "Why am I awake?" and the answer came plainly, "You are healed." I knew what it meant, and in the morning I threw away my smoking outfit; and I have never had any temptation to smoke since then.
More recently, while I was studying Science and Health, I came on Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 406, "The depraved appetite for alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, coffee, opium, is destroyed only by Mind's mastery of the body." I never have had the habit of alcohol or opium, but the word "coffee" held my attention for a moment. My desire for coffee left me, and the words came to me, "You are healed of indigestion." The message has proved to be true.
