Christian Science has indeed been to me "as the shadow...
Christian Science has indeed been to me "as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land." It came to me at a time when I needed comforting, and the comfort came. Since that time I have had many healings, physical, mental, moral, and financial. Problems of unemployment have been solved and harmonious conditions manifested where discord had previously seemed to reign.
One of the most outstanding healings took place some twelve years ago. I had been working very hard for many months, sometimes until one or two o'clock in the morning, under great strain, and was suddenly stricken with a nervous breakdown, which was accompanied by total loss of memory and sight. A Christian Science practitioner was called on the case, and in three days after I was first stricken, memory was restored, and I was able to distinguish the outlines of objects in the room. In a little over a week I could see well enough to go on the street by myself, but I could not read.
I was alone at the time, away from my family, who were not Christian Scientists. When they were notified of the condition, a great deal of fear was expressed over the eye trouble, and at their request I went to an oculist. Work in Christian Science was done before and during the examination, and the oculist was frankly puzzled because he could not find the condition which he thought should be there from the circumstances in the case. So he gave me glasses to wear and said I must not use my eyes any more than necessary. I felt that the fear of those around me retarded the healing somewhat, because for the first two weeks I had felt absolutely no fear, and the healing was progressing beautifully, but after that there did not seem to be much improvement for several months. In about four months, however, I went to live in the home of a Christian Scientist, and there much progress was made in the healing of the various conditions. It was about a year from the time I was taken ill before I was able to resume my former work, which was clerical, and of course required constant use of the eyes. Since that time I have used my eyes as much as I needed to, at various times doing considerable night work.
