Signs of the Times

Topic: Religion and Ethics

[Rev. Ramsden Balmforth, in the Cape Times, Cape Town, South Africa]

Religion does not mean merely the repetition of creeds and formal prayers, the performance of ritual, or correct ecclesiastical vestments. It means faith, hope, charity, loving-kindness, justice, and the healthy vitalities of spiritual life for all. . . . For that higher righteousness for which men long is not going to drop down from the skies. It has first to be born in the hearts of its children ere it can be realized and take shape on earth.

We want a religion which will not be content with the repetition of creeds or the performance of ritual, but a religion based on the clear, fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ and of other great religious teachers like him—a religion of the Golden rule applied to daily life, a religion of the two great commandments of Jesus—love to God and love to man.
