As a boy in a Christian Science School, I often...
As a boy in a Christian Science School, I often wondered why I was admonished by my Sunday school teacher to read each day of the week the Lesson-Sermon given in the Christian Science Quarterly. While the wisdom of this, I am happy to say, has long since been discovered, it was never more clearly recognized than in the following experience of mine about three years ago.
I arose one Sunday morning in anticipation of taking my place as an usher in a Christian Science Sunday School. Before I finished dressing, however, I was stricken by excruciating internal pains, and I was obliged to go back to bed. After some minutes of declaring the truth about the seemingly alarming condition, but without apparent results, I asked a member of my family to call a Christian Science practitioner for help. This was done and absent treatment given. My fear abated rapidly, and I was soon able to think more clearly, although I was still in extreme distress.
In my attempt to realize the allness and goodness of God and my sonship with Him, and the nothingness of the lying material senses, I found that helpful passages from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which I had never attempted to memorize, were coming to me as clearly as though I were reading them from the printed page. Verses and statements with which I was not particularly familiar, and which I had not recently used, were flooding my thoughts. Then I remember addressing myself to God and saying almost aloud: "I've done all I know how to do. I'm in Your hands." At that point, inspired by the truth that had come so clearly to me, I apparently let go of human reasoning and reached out for Him. I suddenly found myself lying still, and without any pain. Within an hour I had dressed, breakfasted, and was in my place in Sunday school, only a few minutes late, after my family had reported that I would be absent. Later the same morning I assisted in preparing for a church meeting by carrying a number of chairs down a flight of stairs. I ate my usual dinner in the middle of the day and returned to church to usher at the evening service without any trace of my early morning experience, nor have I had any return of it since.
