"Painless progress"

[ Written Especially for Young People]

IN her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, declares (p. 224), "There should be painless progress, attended by life and peace instead of discord and death."

It is a right and natural thing to progress, because it is the fulfilling of God's law. It is also inevitable that we must progress, because progress is a law of God. However, this law does not make provision for suffering of any kind. God's law is a law of Love, and Love does not include suffering. Therefore His law is, in reality, a law of denial and destruction to suffering. Yet there are times in world affairs and in human experience when progress seems to be made under much stress and strain. Today, nationally and internationally, we are conscious of a great upheaval, and quite generally it is declared that through this distressing process a purification of mankind and of the nations is sure to be the outcome.

But why this painful process? Why this stress and strain, when our Leader has declared for "painless progress"? Students of Christian Science must be prepared to answer this query. With the general increase of higher standards of education, as well as the great flood of religious enlightenment pouring into the four corners of the earth, the so-called carnal mind has been disturbed from its lethargic, mesmeric sense, and is incensed at its approaching and inevitable destruction. Error thrives in darkness and is destroyed with the light; hence the apparent battle to retain its hold on humanity.
