Sufficiency

On page 507 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Spirit duly feeds and clothes every object, as it appears in the line of spiritual creation, thus tenderly expressing the fatherhood and motherhood of God." The word "duly" is to be carefully noted. Fear of lack or deprivation more frequently attacks the individual with regard to what lies ahead than in the provision for immediate needs. And when thought outlines the future in human terms, its action is purely speculative, based upon neither vision nor knowledge. Mortal prognostications, arguing from the hypotheses of prophecy, rumor, deduction, or premonition, are not only valueless; they are often dangerous. They engender a feeling of fatalism and helplessness.

Whatever the mortal situation which presents itself, the fact remains—sustaining and assuring all human effort which is relying thereon—that Spirit's creation is always duly clothed and fed; that in man the tenderness of the fatherhood and motherhood of God is forever expressed. The certainty of this fact prayerfully adhered to will offset every evil prognostication of present or future lack, and comfort every anxious heart.

The Christian Scientist, to whom the vision of God's allness, infinitely and everywhere expressed in health and abundance, in wisdom and power, has been revealed through the writings of Mrs. Eddy, has a great duty to himself and mankind to perform. He is called upon, whatever the mortal evidence or anticipation, to refuse to accept the argument that he and his universe can ever be anywhere but "in the line of spiritual creation;" that he can ever be other than the expression of Love's tender care.
