My home received the blessing of Christian Science...
My home received the blessing of Christian Science through an eleven-year-old child in the neighborhood, who was attending a Christian Science Sunday School. It was twenty-eight years ago, when we were preparing to move to another city and were having much difficulty. The little girl expressed such confidence that God would show us the way that I was impelled to ask her what she knew about God. The answer, coming from a child, was astounding: she gave the definition of God from page 587 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. We questioned her further, and she lent us her own copy of the textbook. We managed to find time to read much of it in the few days before we left, and my wife and I concluded it was just the sort of religion we were looking for.
Our first occasion to use Christian Science to heal sickness was when our own child was not yet a year old. He became very ill, and as I had said I would never use Christian Science in case of a child's illness, I sent for a doctor, who pronounced it to be acute bronchitis and left a prescription. I learned that the prescription contained calomel, which I objected to giving to a child; and then my reluctance to trusting to Christian Science vanished, and we decided to try it. I called up a practitioner, and within a few minutes the child was sleeping soundly, all suffering having ceased. In the morning he was completely well.
From that time on through the years, Christian Science has been relied upon in our home whenever sickness appeared. I was healed of bronchitis through reading the textbook, and on one occasion, when an infection of the wrist had rendered my arm useless, a telephone call to a practitioner brought an immediate healing. Once, in a neighboring city, I slipped on the ice and fell. I lay on my back with a sharp pain in the side, unable to get up. I thought I must somehow get to a telephone and call a practitioner, for it felt like an internal injury. Then I realized that there were no witnesses for mortal mind, to fasten error upon me, unless I chose to be a witness, and the words on page 298 of the textbook came to me, "Spiritual sense can bear witness only to Truth." The pain left immediately, and I arose, got into my car, and drove home rejoicing that Mind alone governs Mind's ideas.
