I am deeply grateful for all that the study and application of Christian Science have done for me. I am acquiring more spiritual qualities, such as honesty, forgiveness, and tolerance. I find it more natural to love my fellow men. I was healed of bronchitis, tonsillitis, and arthritis by applying the truths taught in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This healing was gradual, but it has been permanent, except for one attack of tonsillitis, which tried to manifest itself through mortal mind's suggestion that contagion was real and had power. On page 442 of Science and Health our revered Leader says: "An improved belief cannot retrograde. When Christ changes a belief of sin or of sickness into a better belief, then belief melts into spiritual understanding, and sin, disease, and death disap-pear." By clinging steadfastly to the fact that "truth cannot be reversed" (ibid.), and prayerfully studying the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, I was soon completely free. I was most grateful for this opportunity to prove more of the truth about God and man in His image and likeness.
I am grateful for every grain of truth I receive, even if to mortal sense I seem to suffer in the process. I was lovingly protected some years ago while washing some garments in a vessel containing three gallons of naphtha. An explosion occurred while my hands were in the fluid. The flames seemed to cover me for a moment, but I was not touched by them—even my clothing was not scorched. As spectators gathered, and I heard inquiries of where and how I was, I could answer for myself: "Here I am. I am all right."
Just as I am grateful to God for Moses, who gave us the Ten Commandments, for Christ Jesus, who gave us the Sermon on the Mount and the Lord's Prayer, I am grateful to God for Mrs. Eddy, who gave us the Christian Science textbook, that all mankind may study it and gain a demonstrable understanding of God as divine Life, Truth, and Love. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and also for class instruction from one of our revered Leader's students. I am indeed humbly grateful for Christian Science.
