Among the Churches

Current Notes

Troy, New York (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Troy, dedicated its edifice at 33 Second Street on Sunday, December 8, 1940. The building had been occupied by the church since December, 1929, but in accordance with a regulation of the Christian Science organization, could be dedicated only when all indebtedness had been met in full. The church, having complied with this requirement, held two dedicatory services, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. At these services a brief sketch giving a history of the church was read.

The church in Troy was incorporated in 1890 and was one of the twenty-six Christian Science churches in existence at that time. Meetings were held first at 92 Fourth Street, then at 3 Seventh Street, and later at 14 Second Street.

It became apparent that a permanent church home was a necessity, and a plot of ground on Second Avenue, beautifully located near the river, was provided, and soon plans for a new building were under way. On Thanksgiving Eve, in 1897, the new church edifice, ready for occupancy and clear of debt, was dedicated.
