Early in my experience Christian Science was brought...
Early in my experience Christian Science was brought into our home. With it came a spiritual awakening, and I was sent to the Christian Science Sunday School. I was receptive to Science, and spent much time in reading the Sentinel.
Because of fear and self-consciousness, I had found schoolwork difficult, but immediately improvement began, and step by step I began to manifest freedom and intelligence. Throughout my schooldays I leaned on divine Principle and learned to do protective work for myself. Due to financial limitation, it seemed almost impossible for me to gain education beyond high school training, but through my reliance on God and by spending much time in Christian Science Reading Rooms, the way and means were provided, and I graduated from a teachers' college. Love provided a fine position for me, and later, when I desired to take a forward step, application was made to teach in one of our largest cities. Examinations were necessary for entrance, and through the help of Christian Science I was led to study the very subjects I needed in preparation. The day of the examinations I found the very questions asked which I had studied, and without hesitancy I wrote on the subjects. My rating proved to be second highest out of many applicants.
A few years later I lost my health and was attacked by nervous disorders—insomnia, exhaustion, and obsessions of various kinds. There were many severe testing times and periods of discouragement, but I adhered unflinchingly to Truth and its ability to heal all our diseases. During this period the divine nature of man became clearer and more manifest. My standpoint of life gradually changed from the material to the spiritual. Certain changes in human relationship took place, and I spent much time in gaining an understanding of my unity with God and the relationship of spiritual ideas. Much loving help was given by practitioners at different times. There was little interruption in my daily life, for I carried on my profession almost all the time. A practitioner who had been a great help turned my thought to the helping of others. Soon opportunities unfolded in a natural way for me to serve, and through this serving my own healing began to appear and strength was gained. In Science and Health (p. 183) Mrs. Eddy says, "Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength."
