From Letters, Substantially As Published

I notice in your correspondence columns a reference to Christian Science. Christian Scientists accept the statement on page 308 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that "God is the only Mind governing man." This Mind is distinct from the carnal or mortal so-called mind, which "is enmity against God." The influence of the carnal mind is hypnotic, and Christian Scientists neither learn nor practice hypnotism. The carnal mind is itself evil because it claims to be at enmity with good. The First Commandment requires men to recognize no other power but God. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says (p. 346), "The nothingness of nothing is plain; but we need to understand that error is nothing, and that its nothingness is not saved, but must be demonstrated in order to prove the somethingness—yea, the allness—of Truth." Those who wish to understand clearly what Christian Science teaches as to the unreality of evil would find a study of "Christian Science versus Pantheism" by Mrs. Eddy very useful. This Message, as well as all other authorized Christian Science literature, can be read, borrowed free of charge, or purchased at any Christian Science Reading Room.
