Freedom through Righteousness
When the Psalmist sang, "I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness," he was proclaiming a metaphysical fact. He was pointing out the real or divine way to freedom from all forms of human bondage, the way of righteousness.
Christian Science reveals that the Adam-dream of life and intelligence in matter—that is, the material view of creation—is the state from which we need to be awakened, or freed; for it is a dream of human bondage. We awaken from it through righteousness, since right thinking, talking, and acting leads to the increasing manifestation of our real selfhood. As Truth and its expression, man, thus unfold to us in the light of this right thinking, we behold God's face "in righteousness"; that is, we apprehend His divine and loving nature and recognize Him as the only Mind and Life. This awakening to the true recognition of God, and of man as His image and likeness, brings with it the consciousness of being "satisfied"—of being made whole—because this recognition frees us from earthly ills. Thus we see clearly that the way to complete freedom from bondage is through righteousness.
When beginning his study of the subject, the student of Christian Science may wonder just how he may gain freedom from aches and pains and other bodily ills. Christian Science lovingly points out that freedom from these torments comes through gaining the right concept of man. Christian Science teaches that the material sense of body is a false concept of man, and that if we are immersed in the belief of matter as reality, we need awaken out of this false sense.
