Christian Science was presented to me when my husband...

Christian Science was presented to me when my husband and I had lost all our material possessions, including our home, and I was deeply grieved over the passing on of my mother and was anticipating the birth of a child. Our land-lord, a Christian Scientist, handed us a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, on the very evening we were contemplating suicide. I shall ever be grateful to God for the great light that flooded my consciousness as we read on through the night, just the first chapter entitled "Prayer." My parents had been faithful church members, and I had had a good early religious training, but here I saw the truth that was immediately available, the truth that I did not have to die in order to avail myself of heaven. The following morning, before noon, my husband had a very lucrative position offered him from an unexpected source. This was our first proof of the power of prayer. Our Leader tells us on page 15 of Science and Health: "To enter into the heart of prayer, the door of the erring senses must be closed. Lips must be mute and materialism silent, that man may have audience with Spirit, the divine Principle, Love, which destroys all error."

Since this first experience, there have been many proofs of God's unfailing goodness. The life of our child was preserved after she had fallen from a second-story porch. This healing took place in about an hour with the help of a consecrated practitioner, and the following day all the visible evidences of the fall had disappeared. There have been many other physical healings in our home: a broken collarbone was healed through radical reliance on Truth, also blood poisoning, a catarrhal condition of years' standing. ptomaine poisoning, obesity, and the effects of frequent falls and fear of falling. Many unpleasant traits of character have been mastered, such as pride, destructive criticism, envy, and selfishness. My husband and I have both been healed of the smoking and social drinking habits, and rejoice in our early release from those self-imposed forms of slavery. While I am deeply grateful for every one of these experiences, I realize they were but steppingstones to a fuller recognition of and reverence for Christian Science, the law of God.

I wish to express gratitude to God for His great goodness; for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose clear spiritual discernment and consecrated life enabled her clear spiritual discernment and consecrated life enabled her to be the Discoverer and Founder of this great Science and to give it to the world through our textbook; for the sacred privilege of class instruction; for membership in The Mother Church and active service in a branch church; and for a clear understanding of the statement, "This is the way, walk ye in it."—(Mrs.) Verna Nichalson Kone, Baltimore, Maryland.
