Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on March 9, 1941.]

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female" (Gal. 3:28)—The Greek words "oukeni," here thrice rendered "there is neither," form an idiomatic phrase which is taken as meaning "there is (or can be) no room for." As a consequence, we find that Moffatt renders: "There is no room for Jew or Greek, there is no room for slave and freeman . . .;" and the American Standard Version has: "There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free."

"Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Gal. 3:29)—It may be recalled that it was announced to Abraham that in him "all families of the earth" were to be blessed (Gen. 12:3), while later on an hier was promised to him. His "seed" was to be as numberless as the stars (Gen. 15:5) and was to have part in an "everlasting covenant" (17:7). Moffatt translates: "You are Abraham's offspring; in virtue of the Promise, you are heirs."
