Scientific Restoration of Harmony
There is undoubtedly increasing recognition among physicians and others who have not studied Christian Science, but whose views have been influenced in some measure by its practice, of the important role of thought in relation to disease. They have seen that certain mental states, such as anger, fear, and the like, contribute to illness, and that as a patient's thinking improves, his health improves correspondingly. But in many instances of ill-health, this knowledge has been of little practical value, because of the difficulties of improving a patient's thoughts by human means.
Christian Science has proved so useful, not only because it has shown that thought is the governing factor in disease—indeed, the only factor—but because it reveals also the scientific method by which thought may be improved until the patient is well. This method is that of understanding and realizing the nature of God, perfect and infinite Mind, divine Love. It soon becomes plain to the student of Christian Science that this one infinite Mind cannot be understood as something apart from oneself. It must be known for what it is, namely, one's own Mind, as well as that of all men. Proportionally as it is thus understood, its inspiration, its assurance, harmony, health, and joy, are experienced, naturally, as one's own; and in this proportion disease is recognized as an impossibility, and disappears.
Summing up the process, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 390), "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." Christ Jesus was clearly pointing to the same healing method when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." And unnumbered Christian Scientists can testify to their release from disease and other bondage as the truth of the completeness, perfection, and majesty of Mind dawned upon them.
