With deepest gratitude to God and to our dear Leader,...
With deepest gratitude to God and to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who has given to humanity the scientific method of healing physical diseases, I offer this testimony with the sincere desire that it may bring a gleam of hope to those battling with despair.
From childhood I seemed to have a predisposition to colds. Later these developed into pneumonia. As the years went on the conditions increased until after my seventh siege with this disease the physicians said they did not see how I lived at all, for there was not enough of the lungs left to throw shadows on an X-ray plate.
While writing to a friend who lived in a distant city, I told her of our plan to go to Colorado, a faint hope of benefit having been held out to me, but not to my husband. The friend, who was a Christian Scientist, replied that God was here as well as in Colorado, and invited me to come to her home. When I was carried into her home, great was her consternation at my appearance, and she confided to me later that she felt that nothing could be done for me, for there was all the appearance of death. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and I frankly stated that I loved the orthodox church of which I was a member, and did not want to change my religion, but only to be healed. With rare wisdom she did not argue, but asked if I would read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to which I gladly assented; and then began one of my most glorious experiences. I had been an earnest Bible student from girlhood, but when the light of Christian Science was turned upon its sacred pages, I found them illumined, and honesty compelled me to admit that this is indeed the truth which Jesus taught and promised to his followers.
