Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons.]

"Deliver me in thy righteousness" (Ps. 71:2)—The word which is here translated "righteousness" is used in Hebrew in various senses, including "truthfulness, faithfulness, salvation." Moffatt suggests: "Oh rescue me, save me, as thou art faithful."

"My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation . . . for I know not the numbers thereof" (Ps. 71:15)—The latter phrase reads literally "for I know not numbers," the thought of the writer clearly being that the proofs of God's righteousness and salvation cannot be numbered—or, as we might express it, "They are innumerable." Moffatt's rendering of the verse is as follows: "All day long I will be telling of thy victorious and faithful aid, though never can I tell it to the full."

"Thou . . . shalt quicken me again" (Ps. 71:20)—Here, as in so many Biblical passages, "quicken" is used in the somewhat archaic meaning of "to make alive" or "bring to life."
