I write this testimony with great joy and gratitude, and with the hope that someone may read it and also gain the "pearl of great price." My elder son, when he was seven years old, had an instantaneous healing of asthma, from which he had suffered since birth. I had heard about the healings of Christian Science, and although I knew nothing about it and had no faith in it, in desperation I called a practitioner for help for him. She asked me to let her know how he was in an hour's time. This rather amused me, for I had been a medical student for four years and had since nursed and asthmatic husband for nine years, and I thought I knew a good deal about the disease—certainly that it could not be healed in an hour. But within that time the child was dressed and running about and completely healed. That was twelve years ago, and the recovery has been permanent.
This so impressed me that I wanted to know how the healing had occurred. I purchased a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and soon realized that, as Paul says, we must be transformed by the renewing of our mind. When I got this new viewpoint of God's infinite love and learned that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468), many healings took place, and my life was really transformed. Scarlet fever disappeared in a few days and left no aftereffects; the patient was up all the time and ate what he liked. Warts and sprains have also been healed.
Some five years ago we were miraculously saved when our car plunged down about four hundred feet in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, near Maritzburg. We were motoring to Durban and had started at midnight. The next day after lunch my husband fell asleep at the wheel, and when I saw that an accident was unavoidable, I turned to my two sons who were sitting behind and said: "Don't be afraid! God is Love." The car was completely smashed, but I had such a realization of the ever-presence of Love that I told the boys to get up, which they did, quite unhurt. It was a public holiday. There were many cars on the road, and a number of people saw the accident, but they appeared to be afraid to come down to help us. Some said that it was a miracle, but I realized that it was "Peniel." As Jacob said, "I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."
