Men and Measures

POLITICAL campaigns, especially those where the outcome appears to be of unusual importance, sometimes degenerate into contests of a merely partisan nature. This may make it difficult for voters not to be unduly influenced by personal prejudice rather than by impersonal consideration of the basic questions involved.

In facing situations of this kind Christian Scientists are helped by a statement included in "A Rule for Motives and Acts" in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. This statement is as follows (Art. VIII, Sect. 1): "Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man." Those who are seeking to be governed by divine Principle, Love, will not be likely to adopt an unduly personal point of view.

Christian Scientists should be concerned primarily with the measures advocated by the candidates for office. It is quite natural, however, that they should feel free to favor the election of candidates who they believe stand for the measures that appear nearest right. And it is quite natural that Christian Scientists should inform themselves with regard to past records and current affiliations of candidates, and also with regard to their integrity.
