A good many years ago I became acquainted with Christian Science...
A good many years ago I became acquainted with Christian Science through the healing of my brother of a so-called incurable organic disease. A testimony of this healing appeared some years ago in The Christian Science Journal. During the time that has since elapsed, this healing has always been a tangible fact to cling to when doubt or fear has tried to creep into my consciousness.
I have had many healings, physical and mental. I should like to tell of two of these. One morning in the early days of my study of Christian Science, I had a very bad fall, striking and injuring severely my left side. The day was a busy one, so that it was evening before I was able to do the necessary mental work on this problem. By this time I was suffering severely and breathing with great difficulty. I remember that I went into the living room and sat down in an easy chair. It was dusk and all was very quiet, and I began to think about God, His allness, His tender care for His children; that I was His child and could not be hurt. I do not know how long I sat there, but when I stood up a wonderful thing had occurred. There was no more pain, and I could breathe freely. How grateful I was for that holy experience! In the meantime, a member of my family had consulted a physician, who was also a personal friend. He said that I had broken a rib or two and must wear a plaster for support. I knew that this was unnecessary, that God would certainly bring about the complete healing without material aids. Although this relative made four trips downtown to obtain the plaster, it was always forgotten, and he finally decided that it was not needed. In the course of a few days, even the memory of the accident vanished. This healing was complete and permanent.
The other healing occurred some years later. This time the difficulty was diagnosed by a dentist as pyorrhea. The healing resulted from a different line of reasoning and spiritual realization. I could see that the belief was that the passing of time caused disease and decay. I reasoned that I was a mental, spiritual being, and so I could not manifest disease or decay. Next came the argument of the passing of time. I knew that this was a mortal belief, but that there was a spiritual fact to know, and I found it in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy in these words (p. 584), "Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded." Then I saw that instead of the passing of time, there was just the unfoldment of good going on, and in this unfoldment there could be only an increasing sense of substance and perfection. This replacing of mortal concepts in my consciousness with the opposite spiritual facts took less than half an hour, and the healing immediately followed. This healing occurred over fifteen years ago and has been permanent.
