Among the Churches

Hempstead, New York (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hempstead, dedicated its church edifice at Hilton and Fulton Avenues on Sunday, March 24, 1940.

Christian Science church activity in Hempstead began in May, 1910, when a small group started holding services in an upper room of the Hempstead Bank Building. Later on they organized as Christian Science Society, and in 1914 became known as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hempstead, a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1915 property was purchased on the corner of Fulton Avenue and Franklin Street, and a frame building, in which services were held, was dedicated in 1920. In 1925 this property was sold, because the attendance exceeded the capacity of the building, and the ground where the present edifice stands was purchased for the new building. Now that all financial obligations have been met, members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hempstead, have, for the second time, dedicated a church edifice.
