Giving

Have I not aught to give? Why, yes—
Though seeming poverty my lot may be,
My treasures still I count in thankfulness.
And these are not alone for me,
Shared gladly, they can many others bless.

A happy thought which brings a smile
To one who needs encouragement! A word
Of love to ease an ache of heart awhile;
A proof of faith that our dear Lord
Saw nought in God's creation to defile!

More precious far than gold the gifts
Which help a weary brother, faint with care,
To realize the love of God, who lifts
All burdens, so that each may dare
To forward go, and leave the thought that drifts!

And giving thus, we too receive—
As flowers, when culled, free buds below;
Our vision cleared, new joys our hearts conceive,
And Love divine uncovered sheds its glow
O'er paths of peace, which all may then perceive.
