The Lever of Spirituality
Every spiritually-minded person has the world at heart, not his own nation only but all the nations of the world. All around him there seem to be turmoil and strife; all around him he appears to see evil striving for the mastery over good, with mankind suffering from the effects of sin, afflicted with disease, enduring the pangs of resentment, envy, jealousy, hatred, anger, and revenge. Every spiritually-minded man and woman with a vision of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, looks upon the anguish of the world with a great compassion, and prays that the time may come speedily when all mankind shall have gained an understanding of God's allness and lost forever the belief that evil is real. For then mankind shall have been saved.
Mrs. Eddy writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 130), "The spirit of Truth is the lever which elevates mankind." Christian Scientists know that the salvation of the world can be achieved in no other way. Mankind must gain the spirit of Truth. What is the situation today? Great numbers of men and women in the nations of the world possess little if any understanding of God—Truth and Love. They lack, in consequence, the spirit of Truth. They lack Christliness. Their thoughts are material. They grovel in materiality, often drinking to its dregs the cup of sensuous desire. Having little regard for spirituality, they live in a constant state of antagonism with one another. Knowing not the law of Love, they fail to practice true brotherhood.
The only power that can reach mankind and save it is spiritual truth. God, Spirit, Truth, must be known as Christian Science reveals Him. The thoughts of men must become spiritualized; and the only lever that can elevate them spiritually is spiritual understanding. They must allow themselves to be led back to the teachings of the master Christian, Christ Jesus; they must ponder these teachings; they must find in them the truth, and catch his spirit. "I am the light of the world," said the Master. "He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (John 8:12).
