Individual Preparation for the Lectures

What constitutes our individual preparatory work for a lecture? This question undoubtedly presents itself to every student of Christian Science at some time. In seeking an answer, we might well begin by considering the basic reasons for the giving of lectures.

A Christian Science lecture presents the truth about God and man's relationship to God; it seeks to meet and answer the questions of those present who may not have read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, or who are at the beginning of their study of it. It includes "a true and just reply to public topics condemning Christian Science," and "bears testimony to the facts pertaining to the life" of our Leader (Church Manual, Art. XXXI, Sect. 2).

A Christian Science lecture is also beneficial to students of the subject. It reveals new vistas of the truth, confirms conclusions drawn from their own study, and often directs their attention afresh to helpful statements in the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings.
