When Christian Science first came into my life, I was...
When Christian Science first came into my life, I was suffering both physically and mentally. I had been badly wounded in the World War and was struggling to ward off a nervous breakdown. My home affairs were far from harmonious, and I was altogether a most unhappy person.
In my extremity I prayed to be shown a way out. Then I was asked by a relative if I would look into the teachings of Christian Science. I knew nothing whatever about this religion, but called at a Christian Science Reading Room in London, where I was most lovingly received, and came away with a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It was during my lunch hour, so I hurried to a restaurant, and while waiting to be served opened the book and read (Pref., p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I shall never forget the effect those words had upon me. For the rest of the day I did little else than read that wonderful book. I understood little of what I read, but my world seemed to be filled with light, and I felt that I was standing on holy ground. As a result of the reading I was healed at once of smoking and drinking, and with the loving help of a practitioner I was lifted out of the nervous condition.
As a result of war wounds I had had part of a leg amputated. Owing to certain complications, I had been told by the doctors that it was doubtful if I should be able to wear an artificial leg, and that on no account was I to consider a job which would mean much standing. I became a member of a branch church at the earliest possible time, and the first duty I was asked to perform was ushering. At first I felt it would be impossible for me to undertake this work, but with the loving assurance and help of a friend, I was able to do it joyfully. As my understanding of Truth grows, I find I am experiencing more and more freedom. Although I have to stand at my work nearly all day, I experience no discomfort. These healings, wonderful as they are, are nothing compared with the understanding of God which Christian Science has given to me.
