"The heart of prayer"

"A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary," declared Jeremiah. The prophet saw that the sanctuary which is man's dwelling place, has from all time been a place of dominion, exalted and radiant. Here, in the very seat of power, only that which brings praise and honor has ever reigned.

Jesus once typified this sanctuary as the closet, and told his disciples that when they entered it they were to shut the door, that they might pray to the Father in secret. In commenting on this, Mary Baker Eddy has written in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 15): "In order to pray aright, we must enter into the closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and silence the material senses."

Here it is that each one establishes his own high throne, or spiritual dominion, within the heart of prayer. Here it is that he sanctifies himself, for his own sake and for the sake of others, "that they also might be sanctified through the truth." Here he finds his true selfhood, and, through prayer, keeps closed the door which would let in all that opposes spiritual communion.
