Christian Science came into my life just in time to save...
Christian Science came into my life just in time to save me from starting out on the dark road which leads a young man astray.
About six years ago, sin, sickness, and the darkness of this world seemed to engulf me. At that time I moved from one rooming house to another, and my new landlady was a student of Christian Science. Out of curiosity I asked if I could go to church with her. My first visit was not the last; it was the beginning of life in a new world, for I had found pure Christianity. I made a strong effort to know more about it, and loving help was at hand. The student who had previously presented Christian Science to me helped me to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, and another student who lived in the same house furnished me with periodicals and the works of Mrs. Eddy, until I was able to buy my own.
These two loving women helped me very much, and I shall always be grateful to them. With their help and my strong desire to understand Christian Science, in a few months I was healed of smoking, social drinking, profanity, of a stomach difficulty of many years' standing, and of many other errors, besides learning to be more loving toward my fellow man.
The employment problem seemed more difficult to solve. I talked it over with the same kind friend who had presented Christian Science to me, and she urged me to consult a practitioner. Following her advice, I went for my first treatment. I told the practitioner of my most urgent needs, which were employment and education. She assured me that through obedience to Truth I could acquire these things. I shall never forget the inspiration and courage received during that visit. The practitioner talked to me lovingly about Christ Jesus, and about God, man, and the universe, admonishing me to study their definitions in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
Through strict obedience to this admonition I found employment. The hours were convenient, and this enabled me to attend a night school and all the church services and lectures. I also had enough time in which to study Christian Science, which I prized very highly, and by economizing, the little I earned was always enough to meet my daily needs. At times I went through deep waters, but the loving, consecrated practitioner was always ready to help me out of darkness. I am most grateful for this help.
I also wish to express my gratitude for our Lesson-Sermons, which are of great importance in our progress toward the goal, and for our Reading Rooms. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church; to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy; to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower; and to our Father-Mother God. My prayer is that I may help our Cause to preserve peace on earth, and good will toward men.
