I am especially grateful for Mrs. Eddy's great love for mankind. This love enabled her to elucidate her discovery of the Christ Science in her textbook, Science and Health, so that all may understand. It was her love for God and man which inspired her to found The Mother Church; to establish the Christian Science publications, including The Christian Science Monitor, our great international daily newspaper; and to provide all the other avenues through which Christian Science is reaching mankind today. I am grateful for The Christian Science Board of Directors, who are loyally carrying on their work.
Christian Science was first presented to me by an experienced medical nurse, who, knowing my many physical ailments, asked me to take up its study. She told me that she had nursed many patients who had been given up by physicians, and who, as a last resort, had turned wholly to Christian Science. She said she had watched them recover, without material means, under Christian Science treatment. This convinced me to the extent that I asked her to send for a copy of Science and Health for me. The book was laid aside, however, for a period of six years, during which time I continued searching for health through many kinds of material treatment, without any permanent benefit. Then I began the study of Christian Science in earnest, not so much for the physical healing as to find the correct definition of God. I was much interested and satisfied with its explanations, when I could understand them, and I began to put everything I learned into practice, with the result that ills of long standing soon faded away. Eight months after I began the study, I was completely healed through my own efforts, of a very serious and painful difficulty of six years' standing, for which physicians had said that I could find relief only by undergoing an operation.
I am grateful for the work of earnest and consecrated practitioners, who later helped me with what seemed to be hard problems. For seven years before coming into Christian Science I had suffered from a serious kidney trouble. This healing began when, through earnest seeking, I glimpsed the spiritual power which holds and supports all right ideas. According to Science and Health (p. 124), "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind." The complete healing came in a very short time.
