Rogaland

In Rogaland recently an article appeared containing a paragraph on Christian Science. The writer evidently has not firsthand knowledge of this religion, and his statements are misleading and rather contradictory. I therefore beg space for some corrections.

The writer opens the paragraph on Christian Science with the statement that "faith can remove mountains." Then he says that the Christian Science church is based on the teaching of healing by prayer, and that it is incontestable that there are many who have been healed by prayer within this church. This is correct enough, but it is difficult to understand how the writer having stated these facts in the next moment concludes "that in reality it is nothing but the self-healing forces of nature itself which are operating, not the effects of prayer," and that the whole thing is a "swindle."

A little further on we are told that the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, "started by allying herself with a hypnotist, of whom she learned various tricks for healing people." This is the critic's third explanation given of Christian Science healing.
