In Luke's Gospel, chapter four, we read that after Jesus had been tempted of the devil he returned to Galilee. From there he went to Nazareth and into a synagogue, where the book of the prophet Esaias was "delivered unto him." He read the prophecy which concerned his own ministry, "and he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down."
Christian Scientists, in their work, which is to emulate the Master in healing the sick and reclaiming the sinner, study the Word of God. They read daily the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, composed of selections from the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. And they too sit down, in order to think and work, and see how much they can absorb of the truth expressed in each Lesson, that this truth may destroy the false beliefs of the carnal mind. A student made it a point to take what he regarded as the dominant thought of each Lesson and analyze it in an impersonal light, then adopt it for his own personal use. For example, if the thought of righteousness was outstanding, then he would look into his own thinking, and see how much of that particular quality he was utilizing.
On page 239 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says: "If action proceeds from the divine Mind, action is harmonious. If it comes from erring mortal mind, it is discordant and ends in sin, sickness, death." Christian Science, which is a practical, demonstrable religion, shows that all real action proceeds from the divine Mind, and that divine Mind, operating through spiritual understanding, heals sickness and destroys sin. Through the knowledge that good is real, and that error has no foundation in Truth, Christian Scientists are daily demonstrating more harmonious activity. They are learning to demonstrate a greater degree of obedience to the law of God, thereby losing the sense of false responsibility which arises from belief in a power apart from Him. They are also learning to find joy in subduing egotism through the realization that, in the words of our Leader (ibid., p. 361), "As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being."
