The Valley Shall Blossom

The achievement of turning a barren desert into fruitful land is an accomplished fact. In many regions great projects are under way or completed, making waste land productive.

So too is a world-wide transformation in progress in the mental realm, wherein Christian Science is accomplishing the great work of spiritual regeneration. Most cheering and encouraging today is the evidence of an awakening such as was foretold by the prophet Isaiah, in beautiful metaphor: "Ye shall go out with joy. ... Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off."

When one is awakened from self-interest to service, from apathetic indifference towards democratic privileges to public-spirited citizenship, from a sense of class hatred to general good will and brotherly love, it must be conceded that a hitherto arid mental area is becoming fruitful. As honesty, charity, and purity appear in individual thinking, displacing deception, acquisitiveness, and sordidness; or when, through spiritualized thinking, a so-called incurable disease gives place to health, then one's experience no longer appears to be a barren, but a fruitful land, wherein is righteousness. As the lover of the world and of the things therein forsakes this love for the worship of God, "in spirit and in truth," and places moral and spiritual values before material gain, this transfiguration is indeed a "sign that shall not be cut off." It proclaims from the housetops the fact that the Christ is here; that the true nature of God is being understood, and His healing and regenerating power effectively demonstrated in this age.
