Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

While the fundamental duty of a Committee on Publication, as stated in the Manual of The Mother Church, is "to correct in a Christian manner impositions on the public in regard to Christian Science, injustices done Mrs. Eddy or members of this Church by the daily press, by periodicals or circulated literature of any sort" (Art. XXX, Sect. 2), a scrutiny of such circulated literature by the Committee and Assistants has revealed only a friendly attitude by the press towards Christian Science and its activities.

For the second time in the last year and a half The Christian Science Monitor has received a hearty welcome to the editorial sanctum of nearly all the newspapers in the state. A statement of willingness to continue subscriptions for another year on the basis of exchange-for-advertising was received from all who had accepted our proposition when first presented last year. Most of these statements were accompanied by letters of appreciation from editors. Space does not permit quoting all such letters, but one is indicative of their nature. The family of one editor, when discussing national or foreign affairs, would terminate the discussion with the statement, "Well, we will wait until we see what the Monitor has to say about it." Editorials and "In Lighter Vein" from the Monitor were frequently quoted from, and proper credit given.

Since the present Committee has been in office, five allusions to Christian Science have required correction. Three of the corrective letters which were offered were published, one of them being given a particularly prominent place in a Parisian daily newspaper. An answer offered to an important literary review, though not published, was an opportunity for establishing friendly contact with this publication.
