My grandfather, who is not a Christian Scientist, had...
My grandfather, who is not a Christian Scientist, had been struggling for many weeks with an organic disorder called kidney trouble. On the evening of November 6, 1937, he was given up to die by the doctor in attendance. He had then been in a state of almost total unconsciousness for nearly twenty-four hours, and the doctor said that he could not last through the night. But we in the family who are Christian Scientists were not willing to accept the testimony of material sense or the verdict of the doctor. We felt that the testing time had come, and that it was for us to demonstrate the power which comes with the understanding that God is Life. The patient desired to be healed, and, although he had more faith in medicine than in Mind, he was perfectly willing to have Christian Science treatment. Accordingly, work was taken up immediately. We clung steadfastly to the truth that man is a perfect, spiritual idea, coexisting with God. At the end of an hour and a half my grandfather awoke and was able to sit up and take nourishment. His condition was so much improved by midnight that we were all able to retire with the quiet assurance that he would live. The following morning when I arose, he was fully dressed and at the table, eating his breakfast. Within four days the healing was complete.
We are all immeasurably grateful for this proof of the efficacy of God's law of Life and harmony applied to human experience, and for the fact that this healing, more than any other single incident, has firmly established the faith of our household in Christian Science as the only healing agent. We are grateful for the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, from which we have learned the truth, and for the loving efforts of our beloved Leader in making her discovery available to all mankind.
